Which bookings are suited to VRI?

by The PAH! Team on

At PAH!, we know that every booking is different. While Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) is convenient and works well for lots of situations, sometimes a Face-to-Face interpreter is the better option.

We want Deaf clients and interpreters to feel confident choosing what will work best. Below are some gentle recommendations based on what we've seen work well across different booking types. If you're ever unsure, we're always happy to chat!

Counselling

These bookings often involve deep emotions, sensitive topics, or complex communication dynamics. In most cases, Face-to-Face interpreting is preferred.

Translation

These can often be done over VRI, depending on the length and complexity of the task.

Financial

Straightforward appointments can work well via VRI, but complex financial discussions might benefit from Face-to-Face.

Funeral

These are deeply personal and emotionally charged events. We gently recommend Face-to-Face interpreting.

Hospital

Where possible, hospital bookings are usually best done Face-to-Face, especially for physical procedures, high-stakes conversations, or where communication access may already be limited (e.g. masks, equipment).

Legal

Legal settings can be high pressure and complex. Face-to-Face is typically recommended.

Medical

Many medical bookings are better suited to Face-to-Face, but short or low-risk check-ups may be fine via VRI.

Meetings

Depends on the formality and content. 1:1s and informal chats often work great via VRI. Whereas, larger meetings, multi party or complex content often benefits from Face-to-Face

Public Events

These are usually live, dynamic and involve multiple people or distractions. Face-to-Face is strongly encouraged.

Religious

Most religious ceremonies and events are best experienced in person with a Face-To-Face interpreter.

Social / Networking / Meals

Connection is key in these bookings, and that often means Face-to-Face works best.

Training

VRI can be great for structured learning if all parties are online, but interactive or hands-on sessions might benefit from being Face-To-Face.

Educational

Online or structured settings may suit VRI. In-class settings usually require Face-to-Face.

Sport

Most sports would be best suited to Face-To-Face interpreters. Fast-paced or group sports are usually better in person. Solo sessions might be okay via VRI depending on the activity.
