You can’t put a price on feeling understood. But when it comes to booking an Auslan interpreter, most people start by asking: “What’s your rate?”

Fair question. But here’s a better one:

Because while cost matters, value is what truly impacts your experience - and makes or breaks the success of a booking.

Whether you're booking an interpreter for a job interview, a hospital appointment, or a social event, I believe you shouldn't be looking for someone who just knows Auslan.

You need someone who understands your world, picks up on what’s going on, and helps everyone understand each other clearly.

I've seen firsthand what happens when interpreting goes beyond the basics.

Great interpreters don't just pick up on what people say... instead, they pick up on tone, power dynamics, and how people speak.

Inter-office politics? They’ll learn them quickly. Subtle sarcasm? They’re already on it. In jokes, banter, family rivalry... all part of their interpretation. 

2. They’ve got a growth mindset 🌱

Valuable interpreters invest time and energy into understanding new environments. They prepare, ask questions, and adjust. They’re not just clocking hours - they’re growing in every booking.

3. They manage boundaries with care 💝

Professionalism matters. Valuable interpreters know when to step back - and when to lean in with thoughtful action. They work hard to provide an equitable experience. For example, overhearing a key moment in the hallway and respectfully passing it onto the Deaf person.

4. They lift you up 💪🏼

Valuable interpreters know they aren't there to shine. Their job is to lift you up. To make sure your message lands, everyone's opinion is voiced, and to ensure you're the VIP, not them. 


So, if you’re booking an interpreter, don’t just ask about their rate. Ask about their ability to bring value
