# Why do I need two interpreters?

by [The PAH! Team](https://www.pahapp.com/pah-blog/author/the-pah-team) on April 13, 2025

You’ve gone to book a sign language interpreter for over an hour, maybe now you're wondering — why do I need *two*?

(If you're an interpreter - read on for validation & advocating skills 🙌🏼 )

**The short answer:**

Interpreting is mentally and physically exhausting! It’s a full-body, brain-on-overdrive kind of gig. And doing it solo for long stretches? Not ideal.

Having a team of ***two*** = accuracy, quality, and injury prevention.

*YES PLEASE!*

Here’s why:

### **1. Brain Drain (a.k.a) Cognitive Load 🧠**

Interpreting isn’t just about knowing two languages—it’s about processing, translating, and delivering information in real time, *without missing a beat*. It requires intense focus, quick thinking, and constant engagement, which leads to mental fatigue fast.

### **2. Physical Strain 💪🏼 😮‍💨**

Sign language isn’t just about hands—it’s full-body communication. Interpreters use their arms, shoulders, and facial expressions non-stop, which can lead to strain and even long-term injuries (think repetitive stress, carpal tunnel, and shoulder fatigue).

### **3. Accuracy & Quality 👌🏼 ✨**

When fatigue sets in, mistakes happen. And in any interpreting setting—whether it’s medical, legal, educational, or a business meeting—accuracy is *everything*. A fresh, alert interpreter ensures clear, effective communication from start to finish.

### **4. Team & Support 👏🏼**

While one interpreter is actively signing, the other rests and stays engaged, ready to jump in if needed. They swap roles at regular intervals, ensuring a smooth flow of communication without burnout.

That’s why we recommend a team of two for any assignment over 60 minutes. It’s not about luxury—it’s about *necessity*. Because when it comes to communication, quality matters.

No one should miss out because of their language 💙
